Leeds United transfer news as club brace themselves for Charlie Cresswell interest

Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell’s future at Elland Road is “uncertain” and it’s safe to assume there will be approaches for the youngster in the summer, according to Phil Hay.

Cresswell is currently on loan at Millwall and has finally found his feet in London recently, enjoying a run of games in a side challenging for the play offs.

Nevertheless, Hay reports that Leeds United will be left with the dilemma of cashing in on the defender after a good season or keeping him in West Yorkshire.

“Cresswell’s situation is more uncertain. He’s on loan at Millwall and, having been a bit in and out for a while, he’s playing regularly for a side who are right in the mix for a play-off place but Leeds were willing to listen to offers for him in January,” as quoted by The Athletic. (3 March)

“Middlesbrough had a look and Stoke made a very late enquiry on deadline day after selling Harry Souttar to Leicester. The interest from Stoke came to nothing but it is safe to assume there will be more approaches for Cresswell when the season ends.

“What Leeds have to ask themselves, on the back of what is developing into a good campaign at Millwall, is whether backing him and keeping him makes more sense than cashing in on him.”

Tough call.

Gary Rowett, Cresswell’s current manager at Millwall recently described the young defender as “outstanding” which is something to consider indeed.

The youngster overcame a tricky start to life in London and has since thrived, something which is a testament to his mentality and resilience.

Is he destined for a future first-team role at Elland Road? That is something most Leeds United fans would love to see happen and it’s still a real possibility.

Keeping young and talented homegrown players at the club is essential and Cresswell has proved in the Championship this season he has what it takes to make the step up.

He’s always done fairly well when given the opportunity to play for the first-team at Leeds and will likely come back from his stint with Millwall breaming with confidence.

Cresswell has what it takes to be a top Premier League talent and it would be foolish for Leeds to cash in on him so early on in his career.
