Leeds United transfer news as Borussia Dortmund look at Archie Gray

Borussia Dortmund are seriously looking at Leeds United star Archie Gray ahead of the January transfer window, according to ESPN.

The outlet reported on its website on Thursday (21 December) that the German giants are eyeing a number of young stars ahead of the window opening in the new year, with 17-year-old Gray one of the names mentioned.

Dortmund still have money to burn having completed the sale of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid last summer for a reported initial £88.5million [Sky Sports, 14 June] and are interested in reinvesting some of that money back into their playing squad.

A new left-back is on the agenda, alongside three 17-year-olds, Leeds’ gem Gray, PSG midfielder Senny Mayulu and Ajax defender Jorrel Hato. All three teenagers have been seriously considered by the Bundesliga powerhouses.

Huge interest

Gray’s performances at Leeds United were never going to go unnoticed by clubs around the world this season, as the 17-year-old has been incredible both in midfield and at right-back for Daniel Farke’s side in the early stages of the campaign.

It isn’t usual for a teenager to be playing such a regular role for a team that are in the hunt for automatic promotion and therefore plenty of teams will be considering a move for Gray. Whether or not they act on that interest remains to be seen.

Leeds United

Dortmund have shown that they are willing to gamble on young Championship products, as was the case with Bellingham so it is only natural that they would be linked with Gray, but Leeds are in a much better position than Birmingham City were when they let Bellingham depart.

If Gray remains at Elland Road, he could well be playing a key part in a Premier League side next season. If he makes the switch to the Bundesliga, there will be no guarantee of regular involvement and it will be a big step into the unknown.

Any such move will take a huge fee to be completed and hopefully, the Whites can fend off any interest, as Gray has a key role to play for them in the next few years.
