Leeds United: Toxic fallout was on cards after Crysencio Summerville development

Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville controversially dispatched a late penalty in the 3-1 win over Hull, avoiding a potentially “toxic” aftermath had he missed, according to The Athletic.

The victory over Hull City kept the Whites in the Championship top two, and it wasn’t short of drama as Summerville and Joel Piroe had a major disagreement over who should take a penalty awarded in the 88th minute.

In her report, Nancy Froston said “The fall-out had he missed could have been toxic but, having decided he was the man to shape the narrative, Summerville proved up to the task, rolling his kick into the net as Ryan Allsop dived the other way.”

Piroe had only entered from the bench three minutes before the penalty being awarded, and following the full-time whistle after Dan James had made it 3-1 from range, Summerville said: “I felt good in the game, we had a few chances, and I thought this one was mine.”

Froston summed it up best in her post on X, saying “the cycle continues until someone’s luck runs out. Sometimes you have to create your own luck – Crysencio Summerville knows how.”

Playing last in a crucial Easter Monday of Championship fixtures, Leeds held their nerve late on at Elland Road, knowing anything but victory would leave them outside the automatic promotion places following earlier wins for both Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

The Whites played well beneath the high standards they’ve established since the turn of the year and looked susceptible to conceding a second goal as the final throes of the game approached at 1-1.

However, Summerville’s winning, and eventual scoring, of his penalty in the 88th minute saw them hit the front with injury time looming, and as Hull pushed for a second equaliser, James fired home from miles out to rubber stamp the points.
