Leeds United: Tony Cascarino drops ‘nearly impossible’ verdict amid Championship admission

Tony Cascarino believes the Championship title race is “nearly impossible” to call, admitting he thought Leeds United were a “given” for promotion.

The Whites are just one point behind Leicester City and Ipswich Town at the top of the table, and Daniel Farke will be keen to take advantage after the Foxes slipped up in a 1-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle on Friday (12 April).

Leeds are set to face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday (13 April), with a victory taking them to first spot before the Tractor Boys have the chance to respond when they take on Middlesbrough at Portman Road.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Saturday (13 April, 6:56am), Cascarino said: “Whoever finds the form out of those three… I thought Leeds would make it, I thought Leeds were the given. Then, Ipswich came with a bit of a run before getting beaten.

“Millwall winning 1-0 against Leicester City was another huge result for Neil Harris’ team at the bottom end. Calling that is nearly impossible.”

Can Leeds United pip Leicester City and Ipswich Town to the Championship title?

The title race has filtered throughout fans in other leagues in England, with neutral fans all taking a side as Leeds, Leicester and Ipswich all look to claim automatic promotion.

Whichever team misses out on the top two spots will be gutted, as the Championship playoffs await, which are always unpredictable and heartbreaking for those who fall short.

The Championship has been an incredible battle so far, and the league title is set to go right down to the wire, especially with each of the three sides experiencing their fair share of slip-ups recently.

The Whites lost their first match since a 1-0 defeat to West Brom in December, with Coventry City claiming a 2-1 win, before drawing 0-0 with Sunderland on Tuesday 9 April.

Leicester’s loss to Plymouth on Friday night was a massive surprise, while Ipswich have copied Leeds’ recent results with a 1-0 loss to Norwich City before drawing 0-0 with Watford.

With just a handful of matches remaining, fans are shuffling to the edge of their seats as they await to see who is crowned champion.
