Leeds United told to re-hire Gary McAllister on interim basis by former player

Andy Couzens has urged Leeds United to hire Gary McAllister on an interim basis as the club continue to struggle to hire their next manager.

Speaking to Leeds United News, the former Whites midfielder has suggested that there’s “no better man” than McAllister to take charge of the club on a short-term basis.

The 58-year-old, who previously worked as a manager at Elland Road, is currently out of work, and he is someone who knows the game inside out.

“I’ll throw another name out there. On an interim basis, something until the end of the season, someone who’s got experience in the Premier League; Gary MacAllister,” said Couzens to LeedsUnited.News.

“Bring him in, he knows the game, he knows the game inside out. He’s out of work. His record as Leeds manager was a good one. If you’re looking into him and you need some help, there’s no better man than him in my eyes in that sense.”

The Whites have failed to bring in a replacement following the sacking of Jesse Marsch.

The club have been linked with a host of managers including the likes of Andoni Iraola, Arne Slot, Marcelo Gallardo, Carlos Corberan, Nuno Espirito Santo and others, but they are yet to appoint their next permanent manager.

Caretaker boss Michael Skubala will remain in charge for the upcoming fixtures, but it is not clear how long will it be. Thus, Skubala could be in charge for the next few games, or he can stay until the end of the season.

But, if Leeds are indeed planning to hire an interim manager, McAllister won’t be a bad option. He knows the club very well, and previously managed in 2008 for 49 games.

He has worked as an assistant at Rangers, Liverpool and Aston Villa, and would be a smart short-term appointment.

He is a club hero, having spent six years at Leeds as a player. As it stands, the Whites board are more than happy to stick with Skubala for the rest of the season.
