Leeds United to finalise Ethan Ampadu transfer today – Phil Hay

Leeds United could finalise the signing of Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu on Tuesday (18 July), according to journalist Phil Hay.

In a tweet posted by The Athletic journalist (18 July), the Welsh international still needs to complete his medical in West Yorkshire before sealing his £7m move which could well be completed on Tuesday (18 July).

The 22-year-old spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Italian outfit Spezia, making 31 Serie A appearances before returning to Stamford Bridge and is finally now set to seal a permanent transfer away after six years as a Chelsea player.

Hay tweeted: “All being well, Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea to Leeds United should be finalised today.

“Terms agreed yesterday still needs to complete a medical.”

Smart acquisition

Leeds United are now finally making moves in the market with the transfer of Ampadu now seemingly being close to completion.

Given the Whites’ current plight in the Championship right now, this looks an incredible and sensible deal by the 49ers and Farke, with Ampadu certainly possessing the qualities to thrive in the division.

Leeds United

The Welshman never got the opportunities his talents warranted at Chelsea, being shipped out on loan on several occasions since his move to West London from Exeter in 2017, and he could well now enjoy a new permanent lease of life at Leeds United with Daniel Farke the ideal manager for him to rejig his career again.

Marc Roca became the latest in a long line of players to leave the club, with Rasmus Kristensen, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Brenden Aaronson among the departed, freeing up big wages for the 49ers to exploit in the market and Ampadu represents a stunning start with potentially more transfer opportunities lying in wait.

Ampadu is a fantastic bet given his versatility, tactical understanding and composure on the ball, traits Farke absolutely loves and the Welshman could prove a secret ingredient for the German coach in the Championship next season.
