Leeds United to complete ‘massive coup’ for Archie Brown after recent developments

Carlton Palmer believes signing Archie Brown ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham would be a “massive coup” for Leeds United.

The Whites are interested in signing the left-back, having monitored him, but face competition from the Premier League trio [TBR Football].

Palmer has urged Brown to be “sensible” and go to a club where he would be a regular, thus giving Leeds a chance of signing him, especially if they secure promotion.

“Leeds went after him in 2023 and were unable to get him, so they are big admirers of the defender, but it’s thought that they will have to be in the Premier League to get his signature”, Palmer told Football League World [14 November].

“But, if the player is sensible, even if you want to go and play in a Premier League side, you look at the type of clubs interested in signing you, and you have to wonder whether you’ll go straight into the side and play, so Leeds could well be in the race.

“It would be a coup for them if they could pull it off and the fact that they could offer him first-team football now and the way they’re going now, they will hopefully see it over the line and get promotion.

“He’ll have more chance of playing in Leeds United’s first-team than he would with Tottenham, West Ham and Chelsea.

“As a young player he’s already had that where he’s not playing regularly and that’s why he went to Switzerland and Belgium, so it would be a massive coup for Leeds United, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Leeds United to complete ‘massive coup’ for Archie Brown

Junior Firpo is in the final months of his contract at Elland Road and with an extension looking unlikely as of March [The Athletic], it is easy to see why Leeds are interested in a new left-back.

However, the Whites are likelier to step up their interest in the Englishman in the summer than January as they would need to secure promotion to be able to compete with the likes of Tottenham and West Ham, as Palmer said.

Should that be the best case, it would not be beyond the realms of possibility that the Yorkshire-based complete the “massive coup” that the former midfielder mentioned.

Brown rose through the ranks at Derby County before joining Lausanne-Sport in 2021. After two years in Switzerland, he moved to Gent at the start of the 2023-24 season.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form for the Belgian Pro League club this season, bagging two goals and four assists in 23 games across all competitions.
