Leeds United target Milos Kerkez may have already played last game for AZ Alkmaar
Milos Kerkez may have already played his last game for AZ Alkmaar as Leeds United target the young full-back, according to Footballtransfers.com.
The 19-year-old defender’s career has exploded in the year since leaving AC Milan for less than £2million, and he is now being looked at by big clubs across Europe.
A full Hungarian international already, AZ are considered to have “gold on their hands” but are already having to “fear his departure” with the growing interest in Kerkez.
He is reportedly now a top target at Elland Road, believed to be “high on the list”, but there is significant competition, with the teenager apparently as important in the eyes of Lazio, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid.
The player has a contract that runs until 2026 and has suggested that he is in no hurry to move, but has already shown his ambition in leaving the San Siro for better opportunities.
Ready?
There is a suggestion that Kerkez needs to remain in the Eredivisie for longer to fully develop his talents, and that is probably true.
But if Leeds United want him they are likely going to have to take a gamble on him early to beat the rush from the likes of Dortmund and Atletico.
If he is capable of continuing to grow at the same pace he has over the previous year then it would likely prove a steal, with a resale market already clear.
But if Jesse Marsch isn’t going to be ready to play him ahead of both Pascal Struijk and Junior Firpo, and new arrival Max Wober, then it might be the wrong move for all parties.
Despite the Salzburg captain’s arrival there looks to be a need for a specialist left-back and Kerkez appears to have the profile of a star in the making.
While perhaps not on the same level in terms of first-team football in the top flight, there are similarities with want-away Whites right-back Cody Drameh who is also interesting Dortmund among others.
The young English defender is struggling for game time behind Rasmus Kristensen and Luke Ayling, so if Kerkez is likely to get stuck in a similar situation on the other side there’s no point in spending the money.
But if the club sees him as a starter with the potential to net a huge sell-on price in two or three seasons then the time is now to strike.
In other Leeds United news, Ben Brereton Diaz could be on the move in this window after all according to one Sky Sports pundit.
