Leeds United talent Sonny Perkins caps incredible Friday of firsts in 6-2 thrashing

Leeds United striker Sonny Perkins had a day to remember this week after he scored his first goal at Elland Road in the 6-2 under-21s thrashing of Southampton.

The former West Ham forward was named in a very strong attacking line-up for the age-group side which would have been a thoroughly daunting proposition for the visiting defence, and so it proved as the teenager scored the sixth, following a hat-trick from first-team star Patrick Bamford.

Crysencio Summerville also scored as well as senior captain Liam Cooper, while new signing Willy Gnonto got his first taste of Whites action, but it was no surprise Perkins was on the scoresheet on Friday (16 September), the same day he was named Premier League 2โ€™s top man for the month and received his first under-19s international selection.

The Leeds Youth Academy Twitter account highlighted the day of achievements, posting after his goal: โ€œSonny Perkins.

โ€œ๐—”๐— : Named PL2 Player of Month for August

โ€œ๐—”๐— : First England Under-19s call-up

โ€œ๐—ฃ๐— : First goal at Elland Road.โ€

Things to come

Five goals for the under-21s got him the monthly award but everyone at the club will be hoping that this is the first of many goals at Elland Road.

West Ham were particularly upset to lose the attacking talent and it isnโ€™t hard to see why considering how he has started life as a United player.

It isnโ€™t often that so many key milestones are packed into one day but that is how it went for Perkins on Friday.

With no first team action for almost a month it was the only opportunity for some members of Jesse Marschโ€™s squad to get a run out, resulting in a pretty unfair XI for an under-21s game.

Bamford showed his class, but it was instructive of how much young talent there current is at Thorp Arch that the likes of Summerville and Perkins shone so much.

The future looks to be in good hands with such a crop of youngsters, and at the current rate the summer arrival from east London could end up being the best of them all.

In other Leeds United news, three important Whites are in line for new contracts this season according to Phil Hay.
