Leeds United table loan enquiry for Newcastle striker Chris Wood in January transfer news

Leeds United have submitted a loan enquiry to Newcastle United in order to bring Chris Wood back to Elland Road, according to Leeds All Over.

CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs revealed (GIVEMESPORT, 23 December) that Leeds could have an opportunity to resign the New Zealand international, who scored 44 goals during his time in West Yorkshire.

It now appears the Whites have firmed up their interest in the 31-year-old with a loan enquiry now being tabled, with there being “hopes” of a deal being concluded (Leeds All Over, 27 December).

Wood would certainly be an upgrade on Patrick Bamford if he did return to West Yorkshire. The 29-year-old has struggled for form in the 2022/23 season and looks like a shadow of his former self. Wood is well-respected and Leeds fans know exactly what he is about.

If he is given the right service, he’s more than capable of scoring ten goals in the second half of the season. Furthermore, considering Wood’s age, a loan deal would make perfect sense for Leeds before they potentially look to sign a longer-term attacking target in the summer.

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle do sanction a move for the former Burnley man, with Alexander Isak still yet to play a significant part for the Magpies since his big-money move in the summer. Therefore, Eddie Howe may well be inclined to keep him at St James’ Park to ensure he still has good depth in the striking department.
