Leeds United: ‘Superb’ Joel Piroe wows despite 2-1 loss v Coventry City

Leeds United fell to a first league defeat of the calendar year against Coventry City but Jon Newsome still offered praise to Joel Piroe, live on the BBC.

The game at The Coventry Building Society Arena started badly for Daniel Farke as Ellis Simms headed home after some scruffy play.

The home side had two just minutes into the second half as Haji Wright got his name on the scoresheet to make it an uphill task for Leeds.

Piroe pulled one back with 15 minutes left to play which was met with high praise from former Leeds man Newsome, although it wasn’t enough in the 2-1 defeat.

Reporting for BBC Radio Leeds [06 April, 16:43], he said: “Piroe knew exactly what he was going to do. It was a superb, silky finish.”

How will the Coventry City loss affect Leeds United?

It is safe to say that it wasn’t an ideal day to lose for Farke as they looked to take advantage of an Ipswich Town derby day slip-up.

The misery compiler came with this loss as Leicester City secured back-to-back wins with a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City.

Although this defeat may feel like a setback, with Ipswich also losing it remains as it was before between the two sides.

There is still all to play for at the top of the Championship. The Foxes still only have a two-point advantage over Leeds although they do have a game in hand.

In second place is now Kieran McKenna’s men who sit just a sole point above United on 87. It appears to be a straight shootout between second and third.

Next up is a struggling Sunderland side at Elland Road. The Black Cats have won one in their last ten and should be there for the taking.

As long as Farke’s side are up for it and get back on the winning trail straight away they can still achieve automatic promotion.

In other Leeds United news, Atletico Madrid are reportedly eyeing up a key member of Farke’s squad.
