Leeds United stunned by Junior Firpo story as transfer request update shared

Leeds United are bemused by speculation linking Junior Firpo with a return to Real Betis this summer, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Graham Smyth reported on 17 July that while Betis may well be keen on Firpo, the 27-year-old left-back has not handed in a transfer request and the Whites are not making any effort to offload him after he proved to be a valuable member of Daniel Farke’s squad last season.

On 16 July, ABC de Sevilla reported that Firpo was willing to agree a pay cut to join Betis, who are supposedly interested in re-signing their former full-back.

However, the YEP suggests that there’s been no movement or contact from Andalusia with Smyth speculating that an agent could be angling for a deal elsewhere.

Will Junior Firpo leave Leeds United this summer?

Right now, it seems unlikely.

Farke’s defence has already seen a lot of change this summer with Luke Ayling, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Archie Gray and Charlie Cresswell moving on and also a bunch of loanees also returning from their spells away from Elland Road.

Firpo and Sam Byram can both play at left-back but if one was to leave, a replacement would be needed and there are few left-backs in the Championship with the pedigree and quality Firpo has.

Last term, the Dominican Republic international proved to be a great attacking threat down the left as he supplied eight assists in 29 Championship appearances. Yes, he has his flaws, but will the Whites really be able to find someone at the peak of their career with Premier League and La Liga experience for less money? It’s unlikely.

Firpo seems happy at Leeds anyway with the Whites seemingly aiming a dig at exit talk regarding the former Barcelona ace with a post on their official X account on Wednesday.
