Leeds United striker Wilfried Gnonto hailed as Tony Yeboah-eqsue by Bridgerton star

Wilfried Gnonto was a very last-minute purchase for Leeds United on transfer deadline day but the reaction from fans has been positive.

The 18-year-old was not included in the squad to face Brentford at the weekend so he could sort out moving to his new city but is expected to be included in the squad for the visit of Nottingham Forest on Monday evening.

He may be asked to go straight into the starting XI against Steve Cooper’s Reds depending on the fitness of Patrick Bamford in what would be a baptism of fire for such a young player.

But the Italian international can be buoyed by the reaction to his arrival which includes that of Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh who has been a Leeds United fan all her life.

“Very excited! Welcome Wilfred Gnonto! Just watched his assists and goals .. has the physique, technique & acceleration of a young Tony Yeboah – let’s hope…!!” she said via her personal Twitter account.

Long term

Any summer signing will have plenty of pressure on their shoulders to come straight into the club and perform but there has to be caution when it comes to Gnonto.

He is still just a teenager who has only just arrived in a new country and even though he has been plying his trade in Switzerland prior to this move, he can’t be expected to light up the Premier League instantly.

If he does, fantastic. Jesse Marsch would love for that to be the case but the American knows that he may have to wait 12 months or more before seeing the true best of Gnonto in a white shirt.

If the hype surrounding him in his native Italy is to be believed, then Leeds United fans can expect to have one of Europe’s most promising strikers to go along with the equally exciting Joe Gelhardt.

But he won’t reach the heights if people expect too much too soon from the Whites’ only deadline day arrival so Elland Road has to recognise the path he is on.

In other Leeds United news, it’s time for the Whites to consider recalling one of their standout loanees after a shaky few weeks for one area in particular.
