Leeds United still set to miss out on Cody Gakpo despite bargain package price

Leeds United are certain to miss out on PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo despite the latest developments, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Guardian journalist wrote for Caughtoffside substack (7 November) that Leeds and Southampton, who were keen to sign in the summer, will no longer be an option for the 23-year-old forward.

Romano suggests that Gakpo’s value will be close to £43.5million in the January window, depending on bonuses and conditions, which could be a “bargain” deal.

“Cody Gakpo’s value will be close to €50m again. It depends on bonuses and conditions, but PSV always wanted €50m package for Gakpo. I think that could be a bargain, so this is surely one to watch in the months ahead,” wrote Romano for Caughtoffside.

“For sure Manchester United will face serious competition for the Dutchman; English clubs and not only, it’s an open race. It’s worth mentioning, however, that while clubs like Leeds and Southampton were in the race for Gakpo in the summer, I expect they would no longer be options as he has his sights set on a bigger move.”

Gakpo has been in outstanding form for the Dutch giants. He has scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in the Eredivisie.

In total, he has managed 18 goals and provided 16 assists in all competitions.

Given the kind of form, he is in, Gakpo definitely looks like a “bargain” at that price. Manchester United are aiming to finish in the top four this season, and they are one of the clubs vying for his signature.

The Whites can do very little about it. If a player doesn’t fancy joining Elland Road, it will be very hard for Victor Orta to lure him to Yorkshire.

Leeds have to be very realistic here. Obviously, a player of his talent would be a tremendous signing for the club and would have given a massive lift. But, they can forget about him now.

It remains to be seen how the Whites approach the January transfer window. They probably will look to sign another striker, while a new left-back and another central midfielder could be targeted.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are set to jet out to Spain with a major decision being made behind the scenes at Elland Road.
