Leeds United star Raphinha bloodied up by Otamendi in Brazil 0-0 v Argentina
Raphinha was the victim of a “reckless attack” when the Leeds United winger was left bloodied up while playing for Brazil on Tuesday, according to The Athletic journalist Jacob Whitehead.
Argentina qualified for the 2022 World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Brazil this week but the game should have gone differently when Nicolas Otamendi avoided punishment for elbowing Raphinha in the mouth.
Replays show that Raphinha was clearly caught by the Benfica centre-back, who left the Leeds star bleeding from his mouth.
According to Whitehead, CONMEBOL has now suspended two officials for failing to punish Otamendi for his aggressive action towards Raphinha.
As shown on Instagram, Raphinha is in good spirits and jetting back to the UK along with Brazil’s other Premier League stars such as Ederson, Alisson and Gabriel Jesus.
Brazil versus Argentina is easily one of the most heated international derbies in football.
They are the two best teams in South America and the level of animosity towards one another is something we don’t really see too often here in Europe.
While great rivalries should be held in a high esteem, there’s a line that needs to be drawn when it comes to aggression and what Otamendi did to Raphinha was totally unacceptable.
CONMEBOL need to be praised for suspending the match officials who failed to do anything about a very serious act of violence towards another player.
Unbelievably, VAR was in operation at the match.
It might have gone differently and Brazil could have won had Argentine been reduced to 10 men – as they should have been.
Marcelo Bielsa might not have been happy to see that happen to his nation if it did but we think he’d rather see his players return from international duty in one piece.
In other Leeds United news, the Spanish press has told a barefaced lie about this Elland Road star, as proven by the Whites.
