Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips on Arsenal shortlist for midfield signing

Arsenal have drawn up a five-man shortlist to strengthen their midfield which includes Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, according to Caught Offside.

The Gunners have reportedly identified the England man alongside Leicester’s Youri Tielemans, Ruben Neves of Wolves, Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, and Fabian Ruiz of Napoli.

The Whites player is already thought to be a key transfer target for Aston Villa and West Ham, with The Times reporting previously a major new contract was being worked on to head off a substantial offer from Villa Park.

The Caught Offside report however suggests Arsenal would not be willing to stump up the same “big money” it would take to land the 26-year-old.

And a source told them: “Phillips is a good player, but Arsenal would surprise me.

“The role, the system he’s performed in for Leeds and England is very different. It would require a big adjustment.”

The boyhood United fan appears to want to remain at Elland Road, and with relegation looking unlikely that should not be hard to confirm.

The Telegraph reported this week that the contract talks have stalled however.

While the Daily Mail has put this down to the player changing agents in the summer, every delay leaves the door open for something to come up that turns his head.

His strong ties to the club should be enough to keep him there as long as the money and the ambition is right.

Although the cash appears to be on offer from Villa and West Ham, they seem like more lateral moves for Phillips, although the Hammers have improved significantly under David Moyes and if they keep hold of Declan Rice it may tempt him.

A traditional big six side offering a major pay rise could be a different matter though, so it will be a relief for fans to hear that the money may not be available at The Emirates.

Whatever the reason for the delay it will continue to be a nagging concern around the club unless or until a new deal is signed.
