Leeds United star Archie Gray returns from international duty early as agreement reached - YEP journalist
Leeds United star Archie Gray has returned home early from international duty, according to Joe Donnohue.
Writing on the Yorkshire Evening Post website on Monday (20 November), the journalist reported that an agreement was reached between the Whites and the Three Lions staff for the 17-year-old to feature in just one of the England U-20s fixtures during the international break.
He added that the midfielder’s early return to Thorp Arch is not injury-related after he made his debut at U-20 level in the 3-0 defeat against Italy on Thursday (16 November).
Makes sense
It was a good move by the Leeds staff to ensure that Gray wasn’t overworked in the international break after previously playing heavily for England U-19s in October.
While exposure to a different environment is good for the teenager, the last thing anyone wants is for him to burn out too quickly.
The midfielder, who has been playing at right-back recently, has featured heavily for the Whites after making 17 appearances since breaking into the first team this season.
Gray will certainly have aspirations of climbing up the ladder for the England youth sides, but it’s down to the staff at club – and international level – to manage his minutes responsibly.
He will now get a few days to rest and recover before Daniel Farke’s side are back in action away at Rotherham United on Friday (24 November).
