Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester right to be angry after Everton charges – Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher has insisted Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City are within their rights to argue that they were unfairly relegated as a result of Everton’s overspending after their latest Premier League charge.
The former Liverpool player stated that the ten-point deduction given to Everton earlier in the season was of no use to those who had already suffered as a result of their rule breaches.
Carragher went on to say that the three clubs could reasonably argue that they would have stayed in the Premier League if not for Everton buying players they couldn’t afford within the profit and sustainability rules.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph [17 January], Carragher shared: “Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City supporters are within their rights to argue – as things stand – they have been punished far more having been relegated last May.
“Everton being docked 10 points earlier this season is no use to those who went down. They can argue they would have survived had the Premier League ordered their relegation rivals to stop buying players they could not afford, or were not permissible under the rules.”
Leeds should feel hard done by
Carragher is right in what he says. Ultimately, Leeds, Leicester and Southampton can argue that Everton may well have taken up one of the relegation places if they didn’t spend money they weren’t allowed to spend.
After Everton were initially docked ten points for a breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, Leeds were among clubs threatening to take the Toffees to court as they felt they had been cheated out of a place in the Premier League.

According to initial reports [Daily Mail, 3 October], the three clubs were set to claim a combined £300million in compensation, although it was later reported that they would favour a negotiated settlement [Daily Mail, 1 December].
Now, though, with yet another charge landing at Everton’s feet, those feelings that they have been cheated out of a place in the Premier League may well return, and the compensation claim could come with it.
