Sky Sports shares Junior Firpo news at Leeds United ahead of January transfer window

Jesse Marsch still believes that Junior Firpo can become a “top player” for Leeds United despite his clear struggles, according to Sky Sports

Firpo hasn’t hit the heights fans expected since his arrival from Spain leaving many to question his place and future within the Leeds United squad.

Nevertheless, Sky Sports shared that Marsch has faith in Firpo, despite the Whites looking to add another left-back to their squad in the January transfer window.

“Leeds are looking to add a new left-back and another striker to their squad next month,” as quoted by Sky Sports.

“There has been criticism of Junior Firpo since his arrival from Spain but Jesse Marsch believes he can still develop into a top player.”

Strange.

Firpo began his professional career with the Dominican Republic club Cibao FC, where he played for two seasons before moving to Spain to join Real Betis in 2017.

He made his debut for the club in September 2017 and quickly established himself as a key player, making over 50 appearances in his first two seasons with the team.

In 2019, Firpo was signed by FC Barcelona, where he continued to play as a left-back. During his time with the club, he has won a number of accolades, including a La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup

A move to Elland Road then transpired but injuries and lack of game time have seen the once-promising youngster possibly become surplus to requirements at the club.

This means Leeds United are now looking for a new left-back in January, which may prove to be the final nail in Firpo’s coffin.

Despite this, Marsch seems to still be backing Firpo but if a new left-back emerges and impresses from the off, it’s hard to see him gaining his place back.
