Leeds United: Sky Sports pundit blasts what happened in ‘terrible’ incident v Sunderland
Michael Dawson has blasted the “terrible” decision to not award Leeds United a penalty against Sunderland on Tuesday (9 April).
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Wednesday (10 April), the pundit said the Black Cats captain Luke O’Nien clearly handled the ball when he went up to challenge Joe Rodon inside the box.
He added that referee Tim Robinson got the decision “completely wrong” as he questioned whether the linesman should have spotted the incident, with the two sides playing out a 0-0 draw at Elland Road.
“As soon as this happened, you look at the Leeds reaction there and that doesn’t always show everything,” said Dawson. “When O’Nien goes up with Joe Rodon there, it’s clear. I don’t know what his arm is doing there, it’s a clear penalty.
“Tim Robinson got it completely wrong. You need help sometimes. The official is looking straight through, should he have seen it? But it was a wrong decision, it was terrible.”
Penalty decision cost Leeds United against Sunderland
It was extremely poor for the officials to not spot the handball by O’Nien as it was pretty clear for most people to see.
While they only get one look at the incident in real-time, those kinds of decisions could prove to be the difference in deciding which division Leeds could be playing in next season.
If the Whites had scored from the resulting penalty, then that could have set them on their way towards picking up an important three points in their promotion bid.

But some people may argue that it evens things up after a Patrick Bamford goal was given against Rotherham United on 10 April when he clearly handballed it.
There will be slight concern for Daniel Farke that his side haven’t been at their best over the past couple of games, but he has the experience to get them back on track ahead of a huge few matches.
In other Leeds United news, Graham Smyth has shared a “serious” admission after the Whites posted their accounts.
