Leeds United: Sky Sports journalist namedrops Daniel James in ‘luxury’ Wales v Poland verdict

Leeds United star Daniel James is one of several players who can help Wales counter-attack due to his pace.

That is according to Sky Sports journalist Geraint Hughes, who shared the verdict ahead of the nation’s match with Poland on Tuesday (26 March).

Rob Page’s side take on the Poles in a Euro 2024 play-off final, having defeated Finland 4-1 in the semi-final on Thursday (21 March).

“Because Wales love to counter-attack, they know they possess several players who are very quick – Neco Wiliams, Dan James, Brennan Johnson to name just three of them,” Hughes wrote for Sky Sports. “And to counter, at times teams have to give up possession and allow the opposition to come on to you.

“It worked a treat against Finland last Thursday, but even then Wales were utterly dominant in the second half, with Finland rarely enjoying any possession. I’m not sure Wales vs Poland will allow either side the luxury of control – it’s going to be a tight affair.”

Can Leeds United star Daniel James make another impact for Wales?

The Cardiff City Stadium is certain to be in full voice for the huge play-off final, just as it was on Thursday for the win against Finland.

Leeds stars Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and Connor Roberts all played the entirety of that match, with their Elland Road teammate James needing to be patient after starting on the bench.

But he has certainly given his international manager plenty to think about ahead of the meeting with Poland, with James finding the back of the net against Finland shortly after coming onto the pitch.

The tricky winger is, however, competing with several talented players for a starting berth, with Page having the luxury of being able to call upon the likes of David Brooks, Harry Wilson and Brennan Johnson in the final third.

James will be eager to start, but the attacker will undoubtedly also be happy to once more play a key role from the bench should that be the case.

James came on in the second half as Wales drew 0-0 with Poland over 120 minutes, before missing the decisive penalty in the shootout that followed.

It is a massive night for Wales, with fans of the country sensing another famous major European tournament experience this summer.
