Leeds United should appoint Pedro Martins at the end of the season

Leeds United have appointed Javi Gracia as their manager but have given him a flexible contract which will be contingent on survival.

Even if he manages to keep them up, they may have reservations over his ability to manage the team for the long term.

In that case, we will not be surprised if they turn to the former Olympiacos manager Pedro Martins who’s currently in the Middle East.

Leeds United were understood to be in formal talks with the Al-Gharafa boss as they aimed to appoint a new manager.

According to O Jogo [15 February], the talks with the Portuguese manager were at an initial stage and the Whites were speaking to other candidates as well.

Martins took over the Al-Gharafa job after winning three league titles in Greece over the last four seasons.

That’s an impressive track record even though it may not be a reputed league as Carlos Corberan himself struggled at the same club and got sacked within months.

Martins plays an attractive style of football and what will set him apart from Gracia is his experience of winning trophies.

Under the San Francisco 49ers, Leeds surely will be aiming to get to the next level and winning a domestic trophy will be the perfect way to kick start a new era.

They may not need to appoint anyone if Gracia shines, but it’s always nice to have a plan in place and prepare for the worst case scenario.
