Short-term contract on cards as Alfred Schreuder new frontrunner for Leeds United job

Former Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder has emerged as the “shock” new frontrunner for the Leeds United job with a short-term contract on the cards, according to the Telegraph.

Schreuder was in the crowd at Elland Road on 12 February to watch the Whites’ Premier League game against Manchester United.

The Telegraph reports that Schreuder may be willing to accept a short-term deal at Leeds United who have been linked with just about every man and his dog this week.

“Former Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder appears to be in pole position to become the new manager of Leeds United after flying in to watch the team’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United,” as quoted by The Telegraph. (12 February)

“Schreuder has emerged as the shock frontrunner just weeks after he was sacked by Ajax for failing to keep the team at the top of the Eredivisie following the departure of Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford last summer.”

Panicking?

Given Schreuder’s bitter and woeful end to life at Ajax only a few weeks back, making a move for the Dutchman seems like an odd decision from Leeds United.

He did win the league title with Club Brugge last season and had the Belgian outfit playing some lovely football but taking on a Premier League club in a relegation dogfight is another challenge in itself.

Whether he is the right man for the Elland Road job is very much up for debate and this now feels like a bit of a panic move from the Leeds United hierarchy.

Nevertheless, with the number of twists and turns that have already taken place in the search for a new head coach, it would hardly be surprising if this didn’t come off either.

However, Schreuder’s presence at Elland Road on Sunday suggests that he is edging ever closer to becoming the new Leeds boss and his face is something Whites may have to get familiar with.
