Leeds United: ‘Shock’ £4m Millwall twist emerges in Charlie Cresswell transfer saga

Millwall have emerged as “shock” contenders to sign Leeds United outcast Charlie Cresswell on a permanent deal as the Whites want around £4million, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon [14 January] that Millwall and Blackburn Rovers are set to battle over the young defender on a permanent deal, bypassing a plethora of Championship sides interested in loaning him until the end of the season.

It is understood that, despite not being known for splashing the cash, the Lions are looking into the option of buying Cresswell from Elland Road this January.

“Millwall and Blackburn Rovers are ready to go to the next level for Leeds United centre-half Charlie Cresswell – and make big cash bids.

“Cresswell is a target for several clubs who want him on loan but now former team Lions are looking into a buy. The Elland Road club are looking for around £4million for Cresswell but could take less with extras.”

Not working out

If Millwall ready a bid that Leeds would be happy accepting, there is no reason why Cresswell would not leave Elland Road this January.

Minutes on the pitch have been hard to come by for the 21-year-old under Daniel Farke, with the manager citing his attitude as the reason, deeming him not “mentally ready”, as per The Athletic.

Cresswell’s links to The Den make a move to Millwall very likely in the transfer window, having experienced a season-long loan with the fellow Championship outfit last season.

He proved his worth on loan, making 30 appearances and scoring four goals. So it is no wonder that Millwall want the defender back with the club floundering in midtable.

The signing of Cresswell could help Millwall to a positive goal difference in the Championship, currently in 16th with a minus-five goal difference, conceding three goals or more on nine occasions in all competitions this season.
