Leeds United set for 'conversations' with Charlie Cresswell over future

The earliest years of a player’s career is always where they learn the most and it is no different for Leeds United teenager Charlie Cresswell.

The 19-year-old has already played five times for the Whites in the Premier League but he desires more regular minutes at a senior level and so will enter discussions with the club over his next step.

A loan move will appear to be the most likely for the six-foot, three-inch England Under-21 international with Jesse Marsch well covered in the central defensive area.

Cresswell’s agent, Hayden Evans, confirmed their intentions on holding talks with the club over his future where he has a contract until 2025.

“You get the frustration of certain fans who say if they’re good enough they’re old enough and they should be given opportunities,” Evans said on the Leeds That podcast.

“But there is a reasonable understanding about why he’s not getting the minutes he might want when you see who is in front of him.

“But he has to get more football soon, we’ll have the usual conversations in the summer and see where it goes from there.”

Year away

He is a very talented young lad, make no mistake, and he could absolutely be a Leeds United regular one day if he keeps his head down and performs every time he steps onto the pitch.

But the likelihood of Marsch making him first choice next season when he has Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch as his options is virtually zero.

That means he needs to leave the club on loan for the entire season and be a regular lower down the football pyramid in England to continue his learning process.

There is almost nothing left to gain by staying in the academy and playing Uner-23s football for another 12 months compared to what he might gain from a year in a senior dressing room.

Cresswell isn’t the only centre-half in this predicament with Leo Hjelde also needing time away from Thorp Arch at this stage in his development but they both need to wait and hope that the manager will allow them to expand their horizons next season.
