Leeds United sell-on clause ready as Max Dean transfer news emerges

Leeds United included a sell-on clause in the sale of Max Dean to MK Dons in January, with the forward now a target for other clubs, according to Joe Donnohue.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported on Tuesday (31 October) that scouts across the British Isles have been alerted to the 19-year-old forward who has scored six goals in six starts in all competitions so far this season in League Two.

Dean is viewed as a pressing forward with a “knack for hitting the target” having impressed for Leeds United at under-21 level and the Whites opted to insert a sell-on clause in his sale as they have done previously when allowing young players to depart Elland Road for “cut-price fees.”

Although the exact details of the clause haven’t been revealed, previously under-21 keeper Elia Caprile joined Bari on a free transfer, only for the Whites to have a 50 per cent sell-on clause and receive a “cash windfall” this summer when he joined Napoli.

Sensible business

Leeds seem to have completed some incredibly sensible both in and out of Elland Road over the last few months and while Dean’s sale was completed under the ownership of Andrea Radrizzani, it represents a rare sensible call from the former owners.

Had the Whites opted to sell the striker for a larger fee when he was sold in January, they wouldn’t have received much of a transfer fee given the teenager’s lack of experience, whereas they will likely see a larger return with a sell-on clause.

It worked wonders in the sale of Caprile and the same could well be true if the reported interest in Dean turns into a concrete bid when the transfer window opens either in January or when the summer rolls around. It won’t be a huge financial boost to Leeds, but it will be a welcome return.

Had Dean remained at Elland Road he would have been restricted to further youth team football given the strength Farke has at his disposal in attack so if he is to get a move further up the EFL in the coming months, it could well be the perfect situation for all parties.
