Leeds United: Sam Greenwood responds on Instagram after red card v Tranmere

Sam Greenwood has responded on Instagram after the 20-year-old was sent off during Leeds United Under-21s’ EFL Trophy fixture against Tranmere Rovers.

Greenwood was shown a straight red card in the second half of the Whites’ 5-3 victory over the League Two side with Leeds Live correspondent Will Jackson (4 October) deeming the tackle “nasty”.

The Leeds youngster has since replied on his personal Instagram account (5 October) with a picture and a caption of him in action at Prenton Park.

“Good performance and win. We keep pushing @LeedsUnited. Also one to learn from for me,” said Greenwood.

Must learn

Greenwood needs to learn from this. Realistically, there was no need for the youngster to produce a rash tackle in a game that wasn’t of much importance to anyone involved. In a high-stakes Premier League game, losing your head can cost the team dearly.

Luckily for Greenwood, he will still be involved for Leeds when they travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday (8 October) with his EFL Trophy suspension only applicable in the competition and not in top-flight matches.

Greenwood does have a tough task to really implement himself into Leeds’ first team plans with a number of youngsters all vying for a place in Jesse Marsch’s plans, particularly up front.

Sonny Perkins, Will Gnonto and Joe Gelhardt all represent fierce competition for Greenwood. Suspensions and rash moments will not help his cause. Let’s hope this is a one-off incident from the 20-year-old.

It will be interesting to see if Marsch does throw any of his younger attackers into action this weekend against the Seagulls.

In other Leeds United news, Adam Forshaw has shared how Marsch tore into one player in front of everyone at traning.
