Leeds United: Robbie Fowler stunned by what he heard about Patrick Bamford, ‘my blood run cold’

Robbie Fowler has been left furious after Leeds United star Patrick Bamford has revealed he was paid a home visit by angry Leeds fans last season.

Speaking on the BBC’s My Mate’s a Footballer podcast on Thursday (8 February), the 30-year-old striker said Whites chiefs had to arrange security at his house on the back of him missing a penalty in the club’s Premier League draw against Newcastle United, with the forward also being forced to close down his social media accounts.

Fowler, sharing his verdict on the news for the Sunday Mirror print edition (11 February, page 65) admits the news about Bamford stunned him.

He wrote: “The is something magical about a sport that stirs the passions of millions around the world. But it’s still only a game.

“To hear Bamford reveal that he was paid a home visit by angry Leeds fans after missing a crucial penalty last season made my blood run cold.

“Bamford later had to cancel his social media account after threats were made against his family. Do those Leeds fans who took the trouble to find out where he lived so that they could threateningly park their cars across his driveway actually think their centre-forward missed on purpose?”

Disgusting treatment of Bamford

This is a massive line that was clearly crossed by a supporter as there is absolutely no way fans should be turning up at a player’s home.

Fowler is absolutely right, do those Leeds United fans think the striker missed the penalty on purpose? Even if he did, the treatment he received afterwards would still have been vile and completely unwarranted.

Everyone gets frustrated with players from time to time, but it should never get too personal because, although we all love the sport, it’s not life and death.

No one deserves to feel as though their family’s safety may be in danger and it’s completely wrong for someone to go to those lengths to express their frustrations.

It must’ve been a difficult time for the forward and his family as this is something you would never expect to happen and it’s no wonder he never looked the same after that incident but huge credit to him for pulling himself out of the mire and performing.
