Leeds United right to be ‘fuming’ after what Danny Murphy noticed vs Newcastle United
Leeds United have every right to be annoyed after their defeat against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Leeds fell to a 4-3 defeat away to Newcastle despite taking the lead on three separate occasions at St James’ Park.
There were pre-match concerns as weather could have impacted the Newcastle clash, but Storm Goretti wasn’t enough to call off the clash in the north east.
Daniel Farke’s side looked destined to secure all three points when Brenden Aaronson scored yet again for Leeds before Harvey Barnes grabbed the winner.
Things could have been so different on the night, with Danny Murphy fully understanding why the Whites will be frustrated by what they saw in NE1.
Danny Murphy unimpressed by penalty call vs Newcastle United
The Elland Road outfit somehow went on to lose against Eddie Howe’s side after being in front on 32, 45 and 79 minutes.
Pascal Struijk could have scored at Newcastle in a moment that could have totally turned the tide, but it wasn’t to be for the away side.
Barnes grabbed the winner with 102 minutes on the clock as Lucas Perri was left clutching at a low effort on the spin.
Before the Englishman scored against Leeds once again, Bruno Guimaraes netted an equaliser after being afforded the chance from the penalty spot.
An attempt from 12 yards was awarded against Aaronson, who was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area.
Farke couldn’t believe the decision post-match, something which has since been echoed by Murphy on Match of the Day.
He said: “You’d be fuming if that was given against you, so would the Newcastle players. It’s soft.“
Steven Warnock agrees with Murphy at Leeds United
Farke was lost for words at full-time as he just couldn’t understand how a penalty was given against Aaronson.
The ball did strike the America international on the arm, but based on his position relative to the ball and stance, there was little he could do to avoid being struck.
The Leeds boss was annoyed and has since been vindicated in his feelings by both Murphy and Stephen Warnock on Match of the Day.
Speaking on the call, the latter said: “I just don’t know what he’s meant to do with his arms. How do you jump? You have to jump with your arms, you have to use them as leverage.
“You just can’t do it any other way. I know they say it’s an unnatural position, and it is if you jump like a star, but you naturally jump with your arms.“
It’s clear to see what the wider footballing world thinks of the decision, but that won’t give Leeds a point or three back at St James’.
