Leeds United remain in race for Cody Gakpo as PSV Eindhoven plans to offer lucrative contract

Leeds United still stay in the race to sign Cody Gakpo, but they face competition from Southampton, according to a report from The Atheltic.

The report (31 August) suggests that PSV are keen to keep the player with them on a lucrative new contract.

Southampton feel that they have reached an agreement for the player, but the race is still wide open.

Time running out?

Leeds need to be quick if they are seriously looking to land Gakpo.

He is a fantastic player and has been in good form as well. Last season, he scored 21 goals. This season, he has scored seven, including three against FC Volendam.

The report from The Atheltic suggests that PSV would cooperate if there’s a suitable offer, and that should encourage the likes of Leeds and Southampton.

This has been a massive transfer window for the Whites, and Gakpo would be a stellar addition for the club.

However, the Whites need to sell at least of their first-team players to fund a move. Dan James has been targeted by Tottenham Hotspur, and there is a possibility that he could leave.

At the moment, Leeds are happy to keep him, but if the player wants to move on, they won’t stand in his way.

Anything can happen on the deadline day, and certainly, Gakpo leaving PSV cannot be ruled out.
