Leeds United ready new Mateo Joseph decision at Elland Road
Leeds United are not expected to allow Mateo Joseph to represent Spain at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, according to Joe Donnohue.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported via X (17 June) that the 20-year-old is set to miss out on the Olympics, even if he is selected by Spain.
Joseph’s involvement with pre-season preparations at Thorp Arch will likely take precedence.
The Olympic Games are not governed by FIFA, and as a result, there is no obligation for clubs to release players for the competition.
Will Daniel Farke hand Mateo Joseph a bigger role at Leeds United in 2024/25?
On the surface, Joseph might be very frustrated by this development.
Every player dreams of representing their country and the opportunity to play at the Olympics only comes around once every four years.
As a result, he might feel as though the club should allow him to represent Spain at the competition.
However, he could also take the glass-half-full approach in this situation.
Leeds ensuring that Joseph is involved with pre-season preparations suggests that he is in Daniel Farke’s thinking ahead of next season.
The forward enjoyed something of a breakthrough campaign last time out, playing 28 times in all competitions for the Whites.
He started and scored twice at Stamford Bridge in a 3-2 FA Cup defeat to Chelsea (28 February).
However, he didn’t make a single start in the Championship.
That looks like it could be set to change next season. With several high-profile players likely to leave this summer, opportunities will arise.
And Joseph should use pre-season to cement himself as a starter for Leeds next year.
