Leeds United: Pundit cannot believe what Ethan Ampadu did in FA Cup win over Peterborough United

ESPN co-commentator Dave Phillips was shocked to see Ethan Ampadu on the scoresheet as Leeds United defeated Peterborough United in the FA Cup on Sunday (7 January).

The Wales midfielder netted twice either side of Patrick Bamford’s stunner to earn the Whites a 3-0 triumph at London Road and book a spot in round four.

Remarkably, Ampadu had only ever scored one career goal prior to this most unlikely of braces and Phillips, commenting after the first goal for ESPN (7 January) on the world-feed coverage of the game, could not contain his surprise.

Leeds United

“I think (Kwame) Poku is playing him (Patrick Bamford) into an onside positon, it took an eternity for the ball to come down,” he said.

“Leeds were more proactive, Pmpadu stabs the ball into the ground, there’s nothing wrong with that, there’s no offside.

“Ampadu scoring a goal, would you believe that?”

Extremely rare

Ampadu’s only other previous career goal came playing for Spezia on loan during the 2022-23 season so to say it was a shock to see him score would be somewhat of an understatement that’s for sure.

The fact he scored twice is absolutely phenomenal! It is no less than the versatile Wales international, who played at centre-back having featured largely in central midfield this season, deserves for some terrific displays this term.

Ampadu has been an ever-present for Daniel Farke’s side and his reliability and composure has been a hallmark of his time at Elland Road, so the supporters will be delighted to see him able to celebrate a couple of goals.

And who knows? Perhaps this will spark more in the future. It’s just a shame for Ampadu really that he will be a little bit outshone by Patrick’s absolute worldie to sandwich his two efforts…in fairness it really was quite special, though.
