Leeds United promotion verdict shared live on air after ‘massive’ win v Sheffield United

Leeds United will be competing for the automatic promotion places after their “massive” win over Sheffield United, according to Jobi McAnuff.

Daniel Farke’s side got back to winning ways after the international break with an excellent 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at Elland Road on Friday (18 October) thanks to goals from Pascal Struijk and Mateo Joseph.

The three points bring the Whites level with Sunderland at the top of the Championship table and while there is a lot of football still to be played, Sky Sports pundit McAnuff thinks Friday’s win could be incredibly important.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football on Friday (18 October, 22:26) he said: “It is, particularly when you look at that list of teams.

“I think it’s now five of the top seven they’ve come up against, only Burnley that have managed to beat them so from that point of view, particularly after everything that happened losing those key players in the summer and also losing [Ethan] Ampadu and [Ilia] Gruev for the last couple of games.

“He [Farke] will be delighted with that start and I think what we’ve seen from them is that they’re certainly going to be there in terms of the top of the table.

“I think it’s massive to beat a team that’s also expected to be there. We saw how close it was last year and how much that can make in terms of beating your rivals so yeah, it’s a brilliant start.”

Will Leeds United win promotion to the Premier League at Elland Road?

While nothing is decided in the race for promotion in October, it does feel as though the win over Sheffield United was a massive step in the right direction for Farke and Leeds United this season.

Against a side that everybody expects to be there or there about this year, the Whites not only held their own but dominated the game. Defensively, they gave up very few chances and going forward they really should have scored more.

Farke’s side cannot get too far ahead of themselves and will be well aware of what happened after last season’s win over Leicester City, but this was a statement victory after the international break and that cannot be understated.

Hopefully, this win over Chris Wilder’s side will act as a springboard for the remainder of the campaign. If the Whites want to be playing Premier League football, that display has to be the standard from here on in, rather than a one-off.
