Leeds United are still considered favourites for the Championship title by the latest calculations of the Opta supercomputer.

The official Opta Analyst page posted on X [16 October] and has rated Leeds' chances of the crown at 37.78 per cent.

Sheffield United are the only other club in the division to be given a probability over 20 per cent, coming in at 20.52 per cent as the two Yorkshire rivals prepare to meet at Elland Road on Friday night [18 October].

Burnley [16.68 per cent], West Bromwich Albion [8.18 per cent] and Norwich City [5.64 per cent] complete the updated predicted top five, while Middlesbrough are expected to finish in sixth.

Leeds United backed for title ahead of Sheffield United showdown

This huge game is entirely unpredictable given the form of both clubs heading into the October international break.

Chris Wilder's Blades would top the Championship at present if not for their two-point deduction over the summer, which places the unbeaten side behind Sunderland on goal difference.

This was a Sunderland side to whom Leeds gifted a point in horror circumstances on 4 October, preventing Daniel Farke's men from sitting joint-second rather than fifth.

Both clubs and both managers have experience of earning promotion to the Premier League in recent years, which builds this game up to anticipate high-quality EFL football.

Each of the two have won four of their last eight meetings, Leeds winning both of the last two in the top flight during the 2020-21 season.

While it is still far too early in the season to describe this as a must-win game, Leeds will not want to pass up the opportunity to claw level on points with a promotion rival, rather than going six points adrift.
