Leeds United promotion chances shift in supercomputer prediction after Burnley’s win

Leeds United are not being given an easy ride to the Premier League with Sheffield United and Burnley hanging on their coat tails.

Burnley secured a 2-1 victory against Cardiff City on Tuesday (5 March), which leaves five points separating Leeds at the top of the Championship and Burnley in third place.

The Whites, Sheffield United and Burnley have all played 35 games which means every game from this point is set to be a crucial one.

Daniel Farke keeping sights set on Premier League promotion

Leeds do still occupy the top spot in the Championship table, but after a 1-1 draw with West Brom on Saturday (1 March), the gap with second place Sheffield United is three points.

This means that with plenty of football still to be played, top spot could certainly change hands between now and the end of the campaign.

With Leeds’ impressive form this term, it’s no surprise that they are still predicted to gain promotion this term, although Burnley’s win has seen their chances alter ever so slightly.

On Saturday (1 March), Leeds were 85.24 per cent likely to win the title, with a 96.16 per cent chance of gaining promotion.

The Opta Supercomputer has been updated to reflect Burnley’s result, though, and Leeds’ chances of winning the title have dropped with a chance of 82.64 per cent.

Promotion, on the other hand, has risen slightly to 96.42 per cent, despite the win for Burnley. This could be down to the difficulty factor of the remaining fixtures being taken into occasion.

Leeds United to keep promotion focus

There is plenty of work to be done and the Whites can’t get too comfortable as they seek a Premier League return this term.

However, Farke has got his side playing some great football and they constantly seem able to pull a result out of the bag, the draw against West Brom being a rare disappointment.

Championship top three.

There have been numerous occasions where the West Yorkshire outfit have looked set to lose the game, only for a late flurry of goals from Leeds to completely change the trajectory of the game.

Even with Burnley winning the game, there is still five points between themselves and the third-placed Clarets in the league, and it would take a monumental change for Farke’s men to drop their standards now.

Nevertheless, Leeds need to keep working hard and accumulating points until they have mathematical confirmation that their return to the Premier League is on.
