Leeds United prepare announcement for Sonny Perkins, transfer now complete – Fabrizio Romano

Leeds United are now preparing the official announcement of young striker Sonny Perkins, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The reliable journalist has reported that the young attacker will become the second teenager to arrive at the club this summer, following Darko Gyabi through the door.

Perkins became available when leaving West Ham after spending over 10 years there, with Leeds now expected to pay a small compensation fee for the deal.

Writing in his latest column for the Guardian on Sunday evening [17 July], Romano shared the latest as the Whites are nice and poised to announce this one.

“Leeds are preparing to announce the signing of Sonny Perkins after the attacking midfielder left West Ham at the end of his contract,” he wrote.

“The 18-year-old, who can also play as a striker, made three appearances for West Ham last season and scored 12 goals at under-23 level but was unable to agree a new deal. He is poised to become the second teenager signed by Leeds this summer after Darko Gyabi, who cost £5m from Manchester City.”

Working away.

Victor Orta has remained at home while the rest of the squad is in Australia, and it looks as though he is set to make his first breakthrough in the window.

Perkins will arrive as an under-23s signing, and it makes perfect sense to bring in another attacker given the first-team commitments of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood now.

Gyabi has travelled to Australia with the rest of the squad, but given other arrivals, he will join Perkins in a new-look academy side that will be looking to bounce back to Division One of the Premier League 2 as soon as possible.

On top of that, they will no doubt be looking to break through into the first team.

Leeds are looking to bring in a new number nine at the senior level too, so it may be harder for Perkins, but he will no doubt have been sold the vision that a clear pathway is there.

It is down to him to roll up his sleeves and make it happen now.
