Leeds United: Phil Hay speaks out about Kalvin Phillips as footage of West Ham incident emerges

Phil Hay has spoken out about Kalvin Philipps amid links with Leeds United after new footage of an incident emerged during his time on loan with West Ham United.

Reports have suggested that the Whites would be willing to spend £30million to bring the England international back to Elland Road this summer, should they be promoted to the Premier League [Sunday Mirror, 31 March].

This news came after footage emerged of the midfielder getting into a verbal altercation with a West Ham fan following the Irons’ defeat to Newcastle. While Athletic journalist Hay didn’t comment on links, he did admit the video was “hard to watch”.

Writing on X on Saturday (30 March) he said: “Having seen how happy Phillips was in himself at Leeds, this is quite hard to watch.”

Will Leeds United sign Kalvin Phillips in the summer transfer window?

For whatever reason, Phillips’ switch to West Ham, like his move to Manchester City, hasn’t worked out and the midfielder’s career needs something to go right when the summer transfer window opens.

It seems unlikely that the Hammers will be eager to sign him permanently given his recent poor performances while he clearly doesn’t have a future at Manchester City. Maybe a switch to Leeds United would suit all parties.

However, the Whites do already have plenty of impressive midfield talent themselves, with the likes of Lilia Gruev, Glen Kamara, Ethan Ampadu and Archie Gray all impressing in the middle of the park under Daniel Farke.

If Leeds are willing to spend £30million on a single player this summer, that money could potentially be better utilised in other areas of the playing squad. Whether this move will happen remains to be seen, but it’s certainly one to keep an eye on.

First, Farke’s side need to book their place in the Premier League.
