Leeds United owners share long-term plan for Jesse Marsch

Leeds United chiefs Victor Orta and Angus Kinnear have opened up on new Elland Road boss Jesse Marsch following yesterday’s appointment (February 28).

The director of football admitted the Whites have had tabs on for a “number of years” during his time in Austria and Germany.

Kinnear believes their “first choice” Marcelo Bielsa replacement will get the team back to winning ways with the support of the fans.

Orta told Leeds Live: “Jesse is someone we identified a number of years ago during his time at Red Bull Salzburg and we believe his philosophy and style of football aligns with that of the club and will suit the players very well.

“We have a long-term plan and firmly believe he can take Leeds United to the next level and are excited for what the future holds.”

Kinnear added: “We are really pleased to have quickly secured the services of our first-choice head coach.

“While the short-term objective for Jesse is obvious, we believe he has the courage and ambition to build on the strong foundations we have created over the last four years and elevate the performance of the club over the long term.

“The fans have been amazing throughout Andrea [Radrizzani]’s tenure and we have no doubt they will unite behind Jesse and ensure the team quickly returns to winning with style.”

Needs must

As sad as it was to see Bielsa go, the results simply weren’t good enough for quite some time.

The fans adore him, and he is a brilliant manager that will go down in Leeds United history, but the club couldn’t afford to drop back down to the Championship after just two seasons back in the Premier League.

The owners have ultimately made the right call here because if they didn’t act, they would be the ones in the firing line.

They gave the Argentine as much time as they possibly could with the season coming to a close in May, but recent hammerings were a worrying sign of more things to come in the latter stages of the season and something that needed to change.

Orta and co have been monitoring Marsch for a long time so hopefully he is the right man to take the Whites to the next level.
