Leeds United open to Liam Cooper contract extension at Elland Road

Leeds United have not come to a final decision over Liam Cooper’s future at Elland Road, but an exit seems more likely than not, according to Leeds Live.

The online source reported [30 May] that Daniel Farke and the club are open to offering the 32-year-old a new contract but his role in the team would be similar next season.

Cooper’s contract is set to expire next month, with Leeds set to publish their retained list soon, which will reveal whether or not the veteran will remain at Elland Road after the summer.

Will Liam Cooper stay at Leeds United next season?

It is clear that the 32-year-old centre-back still believes he has a lot to offer on the pitch, though his experience and wisdom will be extremely important in Farke’s dressing room, especially next season.

Cooper has already won promotion back to the Premier League once before, which could prove vital if the club are to make a charge for the Championship title next season after missing out in the play-off final.

With almost 300 Leeds appearances to his name, the defender is already seen as a cult legend by the Elland Road faithful and will forever be a much-loved figure.

However, some fans have become concerned that Cooper might be past his best and have suggested that the club should move him on this summer rather than offer a new contract.

With Ethan Ampadu and Pascal Struijk tied down to permanent deals, the veteran is likely to remain on the bench for the majority of the season, even if Joe Rodon is to return to Elland Road.

For a player who is currently away on international duty with Scotland, and likely to go to the European Championship in Germany this summer, there is no way he will settle for a spot on the bench for a second consecutive campaign.
