Leeds United open manager talks with Carlos Carvalhal

Leeds United have opened talks with Carlos Carvalhal about the vacant managerial position at Elland Road, according to iG Esporte.

The 57-year-old, who has managed 21 clubs during his managerial career that has spanned over two decades, parted ways with Celta Vigo on 10 June after guiding them to safety on the final day of the season.

Carvalhal is now free on the market after leaving the Spanish outfit and has already had approaches from European clubs, including Leeds.

O Jogo reported on 11 June [page 25] that the Portuguese boss could move to managerless Scottish side Celtic or Championship rivals Leicester City.

Short-term option

The fact that Carvalhal has managed 21 clubs over a 25-year managerial career isn’t the most glittering record.

It seems that either he gets bored on one project or doesn’t do a good enough job to last more than two years in most cases. Out of the clubs he has managed, he has lasted just one year on six occasions.

The one thing that the ex-Celta Vigo manager would bring to the table is prior experience managing in the Championship. Carvalhal has taken the reins with Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday, accumulating three seasons of experience in the EFL.

This will be something that appeals greatly to Leeds, with the club in dire need of bouncing straight back up to the Premier League.

An experienced pair of hands is far more likely to achieve this feat, especially considering the manic nature of England’s second division and how well a manager has to juggle his team due to the number of league fixtures.

Carvalhal has the experience, but he feels like a short-term option who would be brought in with one aim: Championship promotion.

In other Leeds United news, a BBC pundit has been left stunned as Phil Hay has dropped a fresh update on who the Whites are considering to bring in as manager this summer.
