Leeds United now likely to miss out on Raphinha bonus clause

Leeds United now seem unlikely to receive a bonus from FC Barcelona for the sale of Raphinha over the summer, according to Leeds Live.

The Brazilian international left Elland Road for the sunny shores of Spain after a prolonged transfer saga with the Catalan side expected to pay various bonuses and instalments based on the success he has at the Camp Nou.

One of those would have seen a total of £10.3million (or 12million euros) paid to Leeds if Barcelona went on to win the Champions League while he was at the club.

That is looking highly unlikely this season, though, with Xavi’s side sitting third in their group behind Bayern Munich and Inter Milan after a pulsating 3-3 draw with the Italian giants.

The result leaves the Blaugrana three points behind Inter with two games left and both teams still have games against the Bundesliga champions and Czech Republic minnows Viktoria Plzen.

Stupid clause

Victor Orta really shot himself and Leeds United in the foot by inserting this clause and making it such a big amount because it allowed the La Liga side to pay less in other, more likely areas.

For Barcelona to win the Champions League anytime soon, UEFA would have to rid them of any debt they currently have (which is a ridiculous amount) and then find a way to weaken other sides in the competition at the same time.

But as things stand, Barcelona as a club are only going in one direction and it isn’t forwards to a prosperous future.

Raphinha may have now found himself stuck at a club that constantly screws over their players in any way they can and often flaunt the rules without punishment from the necessary governing bodies.

And now Leeds have an eight-figure sum theoretically in place that will never see the banks of Elland Road unless there is some form of miracle in the world of football before Raphinha leaves Catalunya.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites should be owed half of the future sell-on fee of this player who played zero games for the club’s senior team.
