Leeds United not going to ‘go big’ for new left-back transfer – Phil Hay

Leeds United are unlikely to “go big” for a new left-back this summer, according to Phil Hay.

The Athletic journalist has reported that the Whites have held conversations behind the scenes over a new signing after Junior Firpo was ruled out for eight weeks with injury.

The Spaniard is seen as first-choice at Elland Road, but with no real senior back-up with Stuart Dallas also out long-term, Leeds find themselves in a dilemma.

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic on Saturday morning (16 July), Hay shared the latest plans behind the scenes at Elland Road.

“A forward matters more to Leeds in the sense that they are unlikely to go big on any competition they find for Firpo,” he wrote.

“But given that he [Firpo] will miss the start of the season, and given that he was someone who would have wanted a strong pre-season, the club might be doing themselves a favour by covering their back in the market. Conversations to that effect have taken place since Firpo broke down.”

Problem.

There is a real issue building at Elland Road now.

All hopes were on Firpo to nail down his spot at left-back and kick on now that Dallas is out long-term, and he showed great signs against Blackpool in our first pre-season outing.

Instead, he is now out for two months too.

What can Leeds do?

Orta won’t only have a permanent deal in mind, and could even look to bring in an experienced option on loan at Elland Road, he just has to find one good enough that someone won’t mind losing.

The Whites are going all out for a new striker, that is the main priority, but a new left-back has to be a second new arrival between now and the start of September.

Marsch cannot rely on Jack Harrison and Leif Davis to cover that gap, and if the money is available, which we all believe it is, there would be no excuse not to bring in another new face.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites now want to sign this striker with a rival set to kickstart a major £30million+ transfer battle
