‘Man of the match by a mile’ – Some Leeds fans wowed by one player despite loss v West Ham
Plenty of Leeds United fans were impressed with the performance of Luke Ayling during the Whites 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Friday.
After going 1-0 up early on through a Mateusz Klich penalty, goals from Tomas Soucek and Angelo Ogbonna in either half sealed the win for David Moyes’ side.
Playing at centre-back in place of the injured Robin Koch, the 29-year-old was one of the few Leeds players to come out of the game with any credit.
Completing the full 90 minutes, the former Arsenal man completed 1 tackle and 4 interceptions, while he won 2 aerial duels. He also channelled some of his full-back skills, completing 2 dribbles and taking 1 shot (via WhoScored).
Ayling also passed the ball effectively, completing 73 passes, at an 87% completion rate (via WhoScored).
Overall, it was a poor performance by Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who managed 13 shots to the Hammers’ 19. The result leaves the Elland Road side 14th in the Premier table with 12 matches played.
In response to Ayling’s performance, a number of fans said that he deserved to be named man of the match, while another said that he and Kalvin Phillips were the only Whites players defending.
Here are some of the best reactions from Leeds United fans to Ayling’s performance against West Ham on Twitter.
