Leeds United: Simon Rix questions ‘very strange’ Daniel James decision on Wales duty

Simon Rix believes it is “very strange” that Leeds United winger Daniel James did not start for Wales in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia.

James impressed as an early substitute in his country’s 4-0 win over Gibraltar last Wednesday (11 October) when playing a part in a couple of the goals.

However, he found himself among the substitutes again for the showdown with Croatia at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday (15 October).

Speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast on Monday [16 October, 7m 39s], Kaiser Chiefs guitarist Rix questioned Rob Page’s decision.

“I don’t really understand why he’s not starting,” he said. “Against Gibraltar they played a slight B team and he came on after 15 minutes.

“I think he set up two of the goals, so for him to be on the bench again seems very strange.

“But he came on and assisted again [against Croatia], so he’s doing really well.”

Smile on his face

Page will argue that his decision to bench James was justified as the Leeds ace made an impact when brought on in the second half.

The former Manchester United man set up the second of Harry Wilson’s goals as Wales ran out 2-1 winners to boost their Euro 2024 prospects.

James will not want to be seen as an impact sub, but there is no denying he plays a big role when brought on against tiring opposition defenders.

Daniel Farke will surely consider starting James against Norwich City upon Leeds’ return to action as he is in very good form right now.

Across his nine league games for United this term – seven of those being starts – he has assisted four goals and scored another.

And that is not to mention the impact he has had for Wales across their past few games.

James is playing with a smile on his face once again, whether it be for club or country, and that can only be good news for Farke.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are reportedly open to offers for one of their midfield players ahead of the January transfer window.
