Leeds United news round-up: New signing announced, FA to launch probe
Leeds United suffered FA Cup disappointment on Saturday as they were knocked out at the fourth-round stage by Millwall.
Daniel Farke heavily rotated his side and that proved costly as Leeds were beaten 2-0 by fierce rivals Millwall at Elland Road.
There was also news of an injury setback on 8 February, while a new signing was announced rather under the radar.
MOT Leeds News rounds up all of the day’s main stories in one place.
Willy Gnonto at centre of ‘Terrible’ moment v Millwall
Chris Iwelumo hit out at a “terrible” challenge on Willy Gnonto from Casper De Norre that went unpunished against Millwall.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (8 February, 12:40pm), the former Scotland international felt the referee should have punished the Millwall midfielder.
Gnonto played 80 minutes of the defeat on what was a hugely disappointing afternoon for Farke’s side on home soil.
Leeds injury bombshell drops ahead of Watford showdown
Farke confirmed three of his first-choice Leeds players are nursing “a few knocks” ahead of facing Watford on Tuesday.
Speaking after his side exited the FA Cup, Farke said two players absent from the matchday squad weren’t risked whatsoever.
Daniel James and Joe Rodon were two of the regulars absent from the matchday squad as a whole, while Joel Piroe only entered the fray from the bench late on, with Mateo Joseph starting up front in his place.
Farke told reporters: “Rodon and James had knocks. Not fully recovered. Nothing stupid today. Joel Piroe, a few knocks. No sense in risking anything today. [We] hope to have them back for Tuesday.”
FA to launch investigation after what happened in Leeds v Millwall
The FA are set to investigate after Leeds confirmed tragedy chants were heard from Millwall fans in the game, with the Championship clubs to work with the police to find those responsible.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Hackett, the ex-PGMOL chief and FIFA referee, shared that the FA will also be investigating the chants.
“The claims of unacceptable chants will be investigated by The FA and they are likely to ask the police for their observations,” he said.
Leeds United seal out-of-window goalkeeper transfer
Leeds continue to add to their ranks despite the winter transfer window closing on 3 February.
The Whites did not sign any first-team players in January despite them needing to strengthen to further boost their hopes of Premier League promotion.
However it has been confirmed by the club that young goalkeeper Robbie Cook had joined on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
The acquisition of Cook is a strategic move that bolsters the club’s goalkeeping department.
