Leeds United news as PSR update emerges at Elland Road after Archie Gray twist
Leeds United have no problems with profit and sustainability parameters ahead of Archie Gray’s switch to Tottenham, according to Adam Pope.
Writing on his personal X account (1 July), the BBC Sport journalist reports that the 18-year-old is close to joining Spurs in a £40million deal after agreeing personal terms [Ben Jacobs, 1 July], with Joe Rodon returning in a permanent transfer worth around £10million.
Gray was reportedly being sold to help the Whites avoid a PSR breach, however, having sold Marc Roca to Real Betis and with Charlie Cresswell close to moving to Toulouse [Leeds-Live, 30 June] in respective £3.8m deals, Leeds are “comfortably sitting within P&S parameters”.
Leeds United must raise funds, but not for PSR
Paraag Marathe has made it clear that the club need to raise funds this summer, and most people immediately assumed that was due to PSR and FFP concerns.
However, it seems as though the actual reason for a sale is because the club owe over £70m in transfer payments and they needed quick cash to help fund that.
There’s also the fact that they missed out on promotion to the Premier League and players won’t be willing to spend a second season in the Championship.
That is unlikely to be the case for Gray as he absolutely loves Leeds and has a big connection with the fans due to his family links, but a release clause in his contract means he must have been open to the idea somewhat.
It’s a shame, but bringing Rodon back in the deal is a big positive for Daniel Farke and now fans must focus on a future without their generational academy star.
In other Leeds news, another defender is set to leave the club permanently after Cresswell.
