Leeds United news as Nick Hammond appointed new advisor at Elland Road

Leeds United have appointed Nick Hammond as their new interim football advisor to help handle the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Hay noted that the former Reading director has been appointed to the role on a three-month deal.

Hammond will assist the club in their transfer dealings over the coming months, with his short-term deal allowing prospective owners 49ers Enterprises more time to appoint a long-term figure.

“Leeds United have named former Reading director of football Nick Hammond as interim football advisor to help the relegated club handle this summer’s transfer window,” Hay wrote for The Athletic.

“Hammond is joining Leeds on a three-month deal and will assist them in managing incoming and outgoing moves at Elland Road while United conduct a major review of their recruitment and scouting departments.”

Smart move

Leeds simply could not have gone into the summer transfer window without some form of structure in place, but perhaps the appointment of the experienced Hammond was beyond the expectations of some supporters.

The 55-year-old undertook a similar role at Newcastle United in last season’s January transfer window before Dan Ashworth’s arrival from Brighton, so he really has already been there and done it in terms of this current interim situation.

And if he is to have similar success at Elland Road as he did at St James’ Park, then Leeds supporters will go into the new campaign very happy indeed.

The Magpies have come on leaps and bounds in recent times, recently securing Champions League football, and Hammond can definitely say that he played a key part in their rise to the top.

It’s a crucial window for Leeds as they will be forced to deal with the exits of many senior players, while at the same time they must bring in players capable of challenging for immediate promotion to the Premier League.
