Leeds United transfer news as club hopeful Diogo Monteiro will be more impressive than Willy Gnonto
The Athletic’s Phil Hay has shared that Leeds United are hopeful that new January signing Diogo Monteiro will be even more impressive than Willy Gnonto.
Monteiro was signed from Swiss outfit Servette last month just three days after turning 18 and will initially be part of the club’s under-21s setup.
Speaking on The Phil Hay Show (3 February), the journalist shared that he does expect big things to happen with the young centre-back at Leeds United.
“They obviously signed Diego Monteiro, the centre-back from Sevette and Monteiro going to the 21s he’s only 18,” said Hay on The Phil Hay Show. (3 February)
“I think they are quite hopeful that he might actually develop at a similar rate to Gnonto, he might be more impressive, more quickly than people are expecting, I do think big things will happen with him.”
Tough ask.

From what fans have seen from Gnonto so far in his Leeds United career, it will be a tough ask for the young centre-back to be more impressive than the Italian.
Nevertheless, it just goes to show how good the club’s scouting network has become and Whites will welcome players of a similar calibre to Gnonto all day long.
It was a transfer window to remember for Leeds United last month and the signings made showed the clear intentions of the club moving forward.
A club that is desperate to secure Premier League safety and a team that is undoubtedly ambitious in their attempts to propel Marsch’s men up the league table.
The American now has the tools to do just that and there simply can’t be any more excuses from him if results fail to transpire on the pitch.
On paper, the Leeds United squad hasn’t looked this strong for a long time and the depth the club now possesses needs to be utilised in the second half of the campaign.
