Leeds United negotiation with FC Zurich for Wilfried Gnonto ‘not easy’ – Fabrizio Romano
Leeds United are interested in making a move for Zurich FC’s striker Wilfried Gnonto this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Whites are in the market to sign a forward to provide backup for Patrick Bamford who has been struggling with fitness concerns since the last campaign.
Romano, while talking to Givemesport, said that while Leeds remain interested in the 18-year-old but a deal is not easy to conclude with a club like Zurich.
“The most interesting one is Wilfried Gnonto,” he said. “The Italian talent who is doing great with the national team under Roberto Mancini. They like him. But it is not easy to negotiate with Zurich.”
Leeds came into the transfer market knowing that they must sign players who do not only increase the squad depth but will add value to the contingent as well.
Therefore, it is imperative that the Whites sign an outright striker as there is too much reliance on Bamford who has his injury concerns for the last 18 months.
It was his absence which was one of the primary reasons for Leeds’ struggles in the previous campaign as the side narrowly managed to escape relegation.
The Italy international has been a Zurich player since the summer of 2019 when he moved from Serie A side Inter Milan’s U19 team on a free transfer.
Since then, Gnonto, who is now in the final year of his contract with the club, has represented FC Zurich in 71 matches across all competitions where he has managed to score 12 times and provided nine assists in the process [Transfermarkt].
In other Leeds United news, the club are close to agreeing a £4m deal with confidence the player is interested in a Premier League move
