Leeds United ‘need to be careful’ in relegation battle – Newcastle’s Callum Wilson

Jesse Marsch will take charge of his first game as Leeds United manager when the Whites travel to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City.

Saturday lunchtime’s kick-off could prove to be vital in the relegation fight that Leeds find themselves embroiled in after a horrid February during which they conceded 20 goals under Marcelo Bielsa.

Among the clubs battling to stay in the Premier League are Newcastle United who have found themselves going in the opposite direction to the Whites since Eddie Howe took charge in November.

Leeds United

Toon striker Callum Wilson has warned Marsch and Leeds fans that the Magpies are in full steam at the moment.

“Leeds are always an entertaining side,” said Wilson in the Footballers Football Podcast. “People enjoy watching them and enjoying playing against them because you do get opportunities as a striker.

“But I think you need to be careful. The Geordie boys, the Toon Boys, are in full steam. I think the manager has done wonders.

“That’s what Leeds are hoping will happen. Bielsa was obviously a top guy.

“He got you there after so many years and to not stand by him just for a little bit of tricky time is typical football, isn’t it?”

Must stay up

Relegation is not an option for Leeds United this season if they want Marsch to be their manager for the foreseeable future.

Having already managed in the Champions League with both RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig, Marsch might not fancy a year in the Championship playing teams like Luton Town or Blackpool.

That isn’t his level, he is better than that and it wouldn’t be a shock if he didn’t want to plough through a season in the second tier.

That makes this season all the more imperative as if the money and exposure of Premier League football wasn’t enough.

That’s why relegation is not an option for the long term success of the club but it does seem a real possibility with everyone in the mire starting to pick up points while closing the gap to the Whites.

Marsch has to turn things around quickly to ensure Elland Road is still a top division stadium next season.
